About me, my market, and what I love most about my work:
As the “Med City Movie Guy” (a nod to my anchor town’s crown jewel: the Mayo Clinic), I am heard regularly on KROC radio. I like to say that my job isn’t to chime-in on tentpoles like “The Avengers” which have no shortage of opinions, but to amplify lesser-known films that may not be on my audience’s radar. That’s what I like best, discovering and sharing those gems.
This is my passion project, or passion in general:
In addition to film commentary, I am also a history buff and wannabe humor writer; as there is little Venn overlap, I am working on three book projects concurrently.
What it means to me to be part of CCA:
I’ve been a proud member of the CCA since 2009 when it was called the BFCA. I’ve also been on the Critics Choice Documentary Awards nominating committee and the Marketing committee for a few years each. Living in a flyover state, the credibility the organization gives me is invaluable and I appreciate being connected to seasoned professionals who, whether they know it or not, mentor me in the craft.
My Favorite Film/ TV series that I am currently watching and why:
On any given day my top ten will vary greatly but two that are always high on the list are White Heat and Catch Me If You Can. With the latter, Spielberg and DiCaprio created what I think is a perfect film: the story, the acting, but mostly the vibe. As for White Heat, it marked the apex of Cagney’s gangster films and is iconic Raoul Walsh. Then there’s the visceral connection… I members laying on the living room rug watching it on The Late Show growing up with my dad in his La-Z-Boy chair. Film has that capacity to touch us.
