About me, my market, and what I love most about my work:
A Howard University graduate based in Los Angeles, but mid-western born and raised, I’ve been a cinephile for decades and my Mom is the culprit (LOL!). Known in the industry as The Curvy Critic, I can be found on the BeondTV (no this is not a misspelling) app as part of The Stream Team, Rotten Tomatoes, and my award-winning podcast The Curvy Critic with Carla Renata.
Sitting in the dark with a room of strangers watching a film brings me immense joy and is one of the many things I love most about my work. Like a painting hanging in a gallery, we will all walk away with a different perspective and that’s what makes speaking and writing about film so much fun!
This is my passion project, or passion in general:
Shortly after being elected as Co-President of the CCA Documentary Branch (shared with fellow member Christopher Campbell), there has been a desire to redefine how our membership looks at documentaries and foster some exciting opportunities for the branch. It’s a work in progress, but we’re hopeful to get things rolling out soon. So grateful, for those that continue to have faith and support me on this journey where I learn and gain so much knowledge on a daily basis.
Got some things cooking with my podcast, so keep your eyes peeled for that news which should be coming sooner than later.
What it means to me to be part of the CCA:
It’s very satisfying to know that my voice can be heard and taken seriously amongst a group of my peers and constituents as a woman of color in the film criticism space.
My favorite film/TV series that I am currently watching and why:
I love Queen Charlotte on Netflix because I am obsessed with ANYTHING centering around the Royal Family, Abbott Elementary (enough said) and Love to Love You, Donna Summer (because I love Disco music…yeah I said it…lol)
