About me, my market, and what I love most about my work:
I’ve knocked around the entertainment beat in Toronto since 1984 and can’t imagine doing anything else professionally. Our current show What She Said! aimed at women 35+ (we have male fans, too) runs five times a week on stations across Canada, with cross-border listeners as well. Thank you, America! After many thousands of interviews for local television, then on the junket circuit, and now as a radio/online critic and interviewer for the show in Canada, it’s safe to say the best part of the job is learning to understand, inasmuch as my subjects allow, more about human nature, the impulse and drive to make art and its expression in film. These are precious things and I take the responsibility of listening and forming stories seriously. I also love to see many of the artists again and again over the years. And the stories I’ve seen onscreen! Lucky me. I never intended any of it but am so grateful.
This is my passion project, or passion in general:
I feel a kind of glee when settling in to write a review or a story. The power of the right word, and freedom, and shape they offer tickle me to no end. Writing, wrestling with opinions and thoughts, and making cohesive sense of it all is FUN. Sometimes I do a great job, sometimes I do not. That too is fun – the chance to redeem yourself and do better feels good. I’m Chair of the CCA’s Film Festival Committee and we have had a very good year, thanks to our loyal members. Big shout out to John De Simio and Kathia Woods for their wisdom, support, and ideas!
What it means to me to be part of the CCA:
Joey, John, and Jim invited me onboard early on, along with other Canadians, and boy are we glad! The CCA is like family. Thirty-seven years of friendship with these wonderful, innovative folks, watching the BFCA grow, prosper and become the CCA with 600 members is breathtaking. The family’s getting so big. From a dining room at the Beverly Hills Hotel to the, was it the Pyramid Theatre in LA? to today’s prestigious event, the CCA established itself as a major force in the industry. It started in friendship, thank you J., J. and J., and remains so.
My favorite film/TV series that I am currently watching and why:
Bowled over by the TIFF 23 entry Anatomy of a Fall, with exquisite performances by Sandra Hüller, and 13-year-old Milo Machado Graner. Whew. And The Afterparty and Fenris.
